UPSC told to tap paramilitary forces for fresh IPS officers from next year

After consultations for over a year, the government has ordered the Union Public Service Commission to carry out “emergency” recruitment starting next year, of two batches of 70 each, to the Indian Police Service from within the officers of central paramilitary forces.
This will be over and above the 100-150 IPS officers who are hired through the normal civil services recruitment route. The shortage of IPS officers has become a matter of urgent priority due to increased deployment in Naxal-affected areas.
The last such emergency recruitment was in the wake of the 1962 India-China war when several officers drafted into the military cadre were inducted into the civil services under a scheme that continued till 1973.
This decision hasn’t come easy. There was resistance from within the IPS, and the UPSC too. Their argument: any mode of recruitment other than through the civil services exam could dilute quality within the service. The UPSC argued for increasing vacancies within the exam rather than hold an “in-house” recruitment process.

BITSAT exam is of 3-hour duration and there are no breaks in between. It has four sections and a total of 150 questions are generated.
There are 150 objective questions, each with four answer options. For every correct answer a candidate gets 3 marks; while 1 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.
The distribution of 150 questions is as follows:
  • Physics-40 Questions
  • Chemistry-40 Questions
  • English Proficiency-15 Questions
  • Logical Reasoning-10 Questions
  • Mathematics-45 Questions
Parts Subject No of questions
Part 1 Physics 40

SECTION I.ENGLISH

English section again has 2 parts
I. Verbal Ability
Verbal Ability ( VA ) for CAT exam
Questions on Verbal ability are asked in two formats viz.
1.Vocabulary Based
Questions on vocabulary would not be straight synonyms or antonyms. The types of questions would be either odd word out, analogies, fill in the blanks or any other innovative type
2.Grammar based
Grammar is tested either through sentence correction, error identification or fill in the blanks.
II. Reading Comprehension R C
Reading Comprehension (RC) for CAT exam
Reading Comprehension: Typically there are around 5 to 6 passages followed with 5 to 6questions per passage. Each of the passages would be of around 800 to 1300 words. The questions are a good mix of fact based and inference based.
RC passages are long and often based on unfamiliar topics. The basic idea is to test your speed and comprehension skills.

Section 2 Problem Solving (MATH)

Problem solving (maths) for CAT exam
Problem Solving CAT problem solving questions are designed more to test your understanding of underlying mathematical concepts than to test your ability to actually carry out quantitative procedures accurately. Fortunately for many test takers, advanced quantitative topics, such as trigonometry and calculus, are not tested on the CAT. To score well, you only need to be familiar with basic arithmetic, geometry, and algebra, as taught at the high school level. Any decent CAT prep book will cover these quantitative concepts.
CirclesNumbers
Circles + Polygons Numeric logic
Circles + Similarity Permutations
Combinations Quadratic equations
Equations Ratios
Functions Sequence, Series & Progressions
Logarithm Sequences
Logic Solids
Maxima and Minima Triangles
Mensuration TSD
Mensuration + Progression TSD + Progression

Section 3 DI-DS-LR

DI-DS-LR Section has 3 parts
Data interpretation (DI)
Data interpretation (DI) for CAT exam
Data Interpretation tests how well one can interpret information from raw data given. Second skill tested is if one can do calculations without the help of a calculator and that too fast enough.
  • Bar Chart
  • Geometrical diagrams
  • Scatter Diagram
  • Table – Missing Data
  • Table
Data sufficiency (DS)
Data sufficiency (DS) for CAT exam
CAT test writers use data sufficiency questions to test your ability to "reason quantitatively." This stands in sharp contrast to the problem solving section, which is designed to test how well you manipulate numbers. If you find yourself doing a lot of number crunching on the data sufficiency questions, you are doing something wrong.
  • Equations
  • Numeric logic
  • Percentages
Logical reasoning (LR)
Logical reasoning (LR) for CAT exam
You can think of critical reasoning questions as, essentially, mini reading comprehension questions. These questions tend to follow passages that are one paragraph in length. These questions primarily test the analytical and critical thinking skills that admissions committees so badly want to see in their applicants.
  • Matrix Arrangement
  • Number Puzzle
  • Numeric Puzzle

AIEEE EXAM PATTERN

All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE)

Presently a number of tests are conducted by various states/ engineering colleges for entrance to various professional and technical programmes in the country. Multiplicity of such tests causes immense mental and financial burden on students and their parents without adding any value to the system.

As per Guidelines for Deemed Universities, admissions to the identical courses are required to be made on an All-India basis through a common entrance test. In view of this, there have been attempts to hold an All India Engineering Entrance Examination for past some time. This finally fructified in the year 2002, when the first AIEEE was conducted.

The responsibility of conducting All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is assigned to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The Entrance Examination is designed in such a manner that the students coming from rural background are not put to any disadvantage.

Seat Allocation in NITs through AIEEE

Students who have cleared the cut-off mentioned by the Counselling Board of AIEEE are called for centralized counselling where the seats are allocated depending on the student’s rank and his/ her preference of bracnches/ colleges. In the year 2009 the cut-off for the GE category to be eligible for centralized counselling was 100 marks.

In each NIT, 50% of the seats are reserved for the students who have appeared for the Qualifying examination (+2 or equivalent) in that state. All the remaining seats in the NITs are allocated as per the candidate’s national rank.

Syllabus for AIEEE

Syllabus for the test is based on common minimum syllabus drawn from different State Boards of School Education. Syllabus is available in the brochure for AIEEE. Timing of the examination is such that the students can fully use their preparations for Class 12 Examination. It is usually conducted in the end of April or beginning of May every year.

Click here for AIEEE 2010 syllabus

Pattern of AIEEE

Till the year 2005, AIEEE examination comprised of two compulsory papers for which all the students appear and one additional paper meant only for the B.Arch aspirants. Paper 1 contained Physics and Chemistry; Paper 2 contained Mathematics. The weightage for the three subjects was the same but the number of questions and even the time duration of the paper varied. Please refer to the table below

iit exam pattern

IIT-JEE
Questions at the IIT-JEE level will involve integration of concepts which students have learned through different chapters in the 11th and 12th Std. Here, it would be worthwhile to remember that the chapters as presented in your prescribed text books are presented so for ease of learning.

For example, in Physics, the students start learning chapters with titles like Motion in One Dimension, Motion in Two Dimensions, Laws of Motion, Work Energy Power, Rotational Motion etc in that sequence in the 11th Std. State level entrance examinations will focus on quizzing students with question formats which will demand the skills like transforming the language of the problem into the language of problem-solving, identifying the appropriate equations and applying the given conditions to find out the required unknown variable. But IIT-JEE requires much deeper understanding of the subjects. Students should realise that the all the titles of the chapters mentioned earlier fall into one area of Physics called Mechanics. And Mechanics does not have chapters like detailed above. These areas have been dissected and presented with appropriate titles to enhance learning. The JEE will require the ability to seamlessly integrate the concepts from all these areas if the situation so demands.

The Selection Process

Till 2005, the IIT-JEE was conducted in two phases. This consisted of an objective Screening Test in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics administered to all candidates who apply, followed by a descriptive Main Examination in the same subjects. Only those who qualified in the Screening Test were invited to appear for the Main examination. Screening test was conducted usually on the second Sunday of April and the Main examination was conducted on the third Sunday of May.

IIT JEE 2006:

From 2006 onwards, the JEE is a single-phase examination of objective questions only, which will test the aptitude, comprehension and analytical abilities of the student. The stress on the student will be reduced as there is only one type of examination. Also, with the descriptive phase of the JEE eradicated, this is on similar lines as other Engineering Entrance Examinations like the AIEEE and other State Level Engineering Entrance Exams.

The Joint Admission Board of the IITs brought in two more important changes in to the JEE .

  • A minimum of 60% aggregate score in the qualifying examination is a must for admission into the seven IITs, IT, BHU and to ISM, Dhanbad. (relaxation upto 55% in the case of SC, ST and PD candidates)
  • A maximum of two attempts only is permitted per candidate, one in the year of the qualifying examination of the candidate and the other in the following year. JEE 2006 was an one time exception to this rule.

In 2006 JEE had subject wise cut offs and only those students who cleared the subject wise cut offs were ranked as per the overall aggregate marks scored.

In 2006, the JEE consisted of 3 objective papers one each in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. All three exams were conducted on a single day. Each paper consisted of 40 questions.

IIT JEE 2007 onwards....

From 2007 onwards JEE consists of 2 papers each of 3 hour duration. Both papers had questions from ALL three subjects – Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Neither the order of the subjects not the pattern of the questions was prescribed earlier. Timing of the exam is from

Paper 1 – 9.00 to 12.00 am
Paper 2 – 2.00 to 5.00 pm

Various patterns of questions and various combinations of these models are used in the JEE papers . We will first describe the patterns of questions and then give you the combinations used.

Straight Objective type:

These are the Regular Multiple Choice questions with four choices provided. Only one among the four choices will be the correct answer. The students are expected to mark only one bubble in the OMR sheet. Usually one correct answer fetches 3 marks and a wrong answer fetches negative one (–1).

Multiple Correct Answers type:

Multiple Choice questions with four choices provided, but one or more of the choices provided may be correct. The students are required to mark ALL correct choices and ONLY the correct choices in the OMR sheet. These questions carry four marks each and sometimes carry one negative mark for wrong answers.

Integer Answer type Questions:

The questions in these sections were numerical problems, for which no choices were provided. The students were required to find the exact answers to numerical problems and enter the same in OMR sheets – like the way we enter the actual Date of Birth or other values in full. Answers can be one digit or two digit numerals. The sample OMR sheet for one digit answers is as given below:

Q21 0 Q22 0
1 2
2 2
3 3
5 5
5 5
6 6
7 7
8 8
9 9

Each question carries 6 to 8 marks. For a wrong response, NO marks would be deducted from the total score.

Linked Comprehension type Questions:

Comprehension based questions consist of a small passage, followed by three multiple choice questions. The questions were of single correct answer type. The student is supposed to read the passage, understand the concept / application described, use his subject knowledge and answer the questions. Each question carries 3 to 5 marks with one or two marks deducted for a wrong response.

Reasoning Type Questions:

These questions check the analytical and reasoning skills of the students. Two statements are provided – Statement 1 and Statement 2. The student is expected to verify if both statements are true and if both are true, verify if statement 1 follows from statement 2.

Matrix Match type Questions:

These questions are the regular “Match the Following” variety. Two columns each containing 4 subdivisions OR first column with four subdivisions and second column with more subdivisions are given and the student should match elements of column I to that of column II. There can be one or more matches. In 2007 student scored six marks if he / she marks all rows correctly. In 2008, partial marking was introduced and if the student marks one row correctly, he / she scores 1.5 marks against 8 marks for marking the entire question correctly. In 2009, partial marking was raised to 2 per correct row with a total of 8 marks for the question. There were no negative marks in this section all through.

Students with solid learning of basics will do well in the comprehension-based new pattern. A mechanical problem solving approach will not make the grade.

IIT-JEE 2010

Syllabus for IIT JEE is as prescribed by the Joint Admission Board of the IITs and is given in the Brochure for JEE . Largely it comprises of the core areas of the XI and XII syllabus as per the CBSE board with some deletions from it. But the depth of conceptual understanding required to answer a JEE paper does not simply end in by-hearting or learning the basics alone. It requires deep overall understanding and integration of concepts, use of good level of mathematical techniques and ability to break up complex problems into smaller ones and solve them.

IIT-JEE 2010 – Pattern

IIT-JEE 2010 was conducted on 11th April 2010 with paper 1 from 9.00 – 12.00 hrs and paper 2 from 14.00 to 17.00 hrs.
IIT-JEE 2010 question papers were offered in ten different versions - 0 to 9. All contestants would essentially have the same questions, but the order of questions was jumbled in each section in the ten versions.
The order of subjects in both papers were the same – Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics but the total marks, the number of questions and types of questions in both papers were distinct from each other.
Paper 1
Paper1 had 84 questions in total - in the order of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Each subject had 28 questions and the pattern was exactly the same for all the subjects. All questions carried 3 marks. Hence the maximum mark for the paper is 252.
Type of question Number of questions Marks for a correct answer Negative marking Total Marks for the Section
Section I - Single Correct Choice Type 8 3 – 1 24
Section II - Multiple Correct Choice Type 5 3 NIL 15
Section III - Paragraph Type 5 3 – 1 15
Section IV - Integer Type 10 3 NIL 30

What was new in IIT-JEE 2010 in comparison with earlier years – Paper 1:
  • In the paragraph type 2 passages were there of which one passage had 3 questions and the other had 2 questions. Earlier all passages used to have the same number of questions.
  • Likewise partial marks are awarded for correct answers in Multiple Correct Type questions.
  • There were NO negative marks for the Integer type questions and for the Multiple Correct Choice Type.

Paper 2
Paper 1 had 57 questions in total - in the order of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Each subject had 19 questions and as in paper 1 the pattern was exactly the same across the subjects. But questions had differential markings, each subject had 79 marks and the maximum mark for the paper is 237.
Type of question Number of questions Marks for a correct answer Negative marking Total Marks for the Section
Section I - Single Correct Choice Type 6 5 – 2 30
Section II - Integer Type 5 3 NIL 15
Section III - Paragraph Type 6 3 – 1 18
Section IV – Matrix Type 2 8 NIL 16

What was new in IIT-JEE 2010 in comparison with earlier years – Paper 2:
  • Single Correct Choice questions were valued heavier than before - 5 marks for a correct answer with (– 2) for an incorrect answer.
